pasque flower
Hike up the Sinks Canyon Falls trail, just outside of Lander in early May, and you will surely see the beautiful Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) blooming all over the grassy hillsides. An early spring bloomer , this plant is the state flower of South Dakota, and is also native to Wyoming. The cup-like flowers with their contrasting golden stamens are followed by rather amusing feathery seed heads. A perfect plant to naturalize in rock gardens or native xeric landscapes, it likes sun and can tolerate dry soil. Also, not attractive to deer!
