ITOH PEONIES
A cross between the woody tree peony and the garden peony, Itoh's (pronounced ee-toe) are a combination of the best traits: large, colorful blooms on sturdy stems that don't flop, plus the mounded, die-back habit of garden peonies, making them low-maintenance, popular for their vibrant yellows, corals, and unique foliage. Named for Japanese breeder Toichi Itoh who created the first cross, they offer extended bloom times and are prized for cut flowers. The enormous flowers are the size of dinner plates, up to 8 inches across and start blooming just as the other garden peonies are winding down, thus extending the Peony season another two weeks or more. The foliage is even attractive and will last all the way thru fall.
