Fertilizer
A important part of gardening, fertilizer is essential to having a flourishing garden. So which fertilizer do you need? This question can first be answered by understanding the composition of a fertilizer starting with the first three numbers or N-P-k number. This number is the percentage and ratio of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium that the fertilizer contains.
#1- NitrogenNitrogen is responsible for vigorous green growth |
#2- PhosphatePhosphate is responsible for the development of flowers, fruits, seeds, and strong roots. It also helps the plant use other nutrients efficiently |
#3- PotassiumEnhances overall growth and helps regulate root and foliage growth. Keeps plants balanced |
When choosing a fertilizer remember the following tips. Fertilizers high in nitrogen will have lots of green growth, but may not have as many blooms and fruit. A common problem with some vegetables, such as tomatoes will be a huge plant but no tomatoes. This is a problem caused by too much nitrogen, and not enough phosphorus or potassium. A balanced fertilizer is usually the best option with an even ratio across the all three numbers. To encourage more blooming, a fertilizer that has slightly higher phosphate may be a great option. Another thing to remember when purchasing fertilizer is tomatoes and pepper need calcium to avoid a common problem called blossom end rot. Many specialized tomato fertilizers have calcium added to them to avoid this problem and can be very beneficial to the heath of your plant. Here are a few of our favorite fertilizers that we carry at Sprouts.
