TOMATILLO & GROUND CHERRIES
Tomatillos, sometimes referred to as husk tomatoes, have a papery thin husk surrounding the fruit that splits when ripe. Native to Mexico, they are a staple in Salsa Verde and other ethnic dishes. With good disease resistance and very little pest problems, Tomatillos are a low maintenance plant that are sure to provide with a large harvest. They are drought and heat tolerant, and can be planted in a variety of soils. Tomatillos have a tangy, slightly acidic flavor that makes a superb salsa.
Ground Cherries are related to the Tomatillo- they both have papery husks that hide their beauty and flavor. These small fruits have a flavor that is a sweet, like a cross between a tomato and a pineapple. The fruit falls from the plant just before they are fully ripe. All you have to do is collect the husk-covered fruits off the ground for the perfect harvest. They make a wonderful, tropical tasting salsa!
