BASIL

A classic for every gardener and chef, Basil has a unique and unbeatable flavor. The leaves of the plant are packed with nutrients and great flavor. Basil is used in a variety of dishes, a favorite is pesto! Basil loves warm weather and requires 6-8 hours of light. It prefers to be planted in morning sun rather than hot afternoon sun. A great container and garden plant, Basil can be grown in a variety of places and require well draining soil with even waterings. Pinch leaves off to encourage bushing and prevent flowering, once basil goes to seed, the leaves do loose some of their flavor. A big problem with basil is root rot, so make sure that the soil is extremely well draining. To prolong your basil, just bring it in when weather begins to turn cold, as basil plants are very frost sensitive.
