GRAPES

Growing grapes in the northern climates is a surprisingly endeavor, as there are several very good cold hardy varieties well suited to shorter growing seasons and harsh winters.  Grape vines will need some sort of support, an arbor or trellis, a fence, or a post to support the trunk of the vine. They can be trained or pruned to suit just about any form or shape.
Young grapes require about 1/2" to 1" of water per week. When watering young vines, saturate the root zone. Apply 5 gallons of water over a 3 x 3 foot area for 1 inch of water. Reduce watering in the fall to force the plant to harden off for winter.  As the vine ages, watering can be reduced, as older, established vines are more drought tolerant. Grape vine roots like warm soil, so mulching is not necessary as it tends to keep the soil cooler. Grape vines grow vigorously, give them a nutrient boost each year. Pruning is essential to the health and productivity of the plant. Grapes are produced on new shoots each year, not on old branches.   The University of Minnesota Extension website is an excellent source of information on growing grapes in general and how to prune the vines to ensure a steady crop of delicious grapes from year to year.
