HASKAP BERRY (hONEYBERRY)
The Haskap Berry, also known as Honeyberry, is a cold hardy fruit in the honeysuckle family that is high in vitamin C, with more antioxidants than raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries. The berries themselves are actually inside the blue outer shell with a flavor that is tangy and sweet. Native to northern hemisphere countries like Canada, Japan, and Russia, these large shrubs can tolerate harsh winters and are one of the first fruits to appear in the late spring/early summer. They grow well in sun to part sun locations in rich, moist, well-draining soil. They do require cross pollination, be sure to plant two different varieties and give each shrub enough space for good air circulation and growth. The berries freeze well and are superb in pies, jams, or any recipe that calls for berries.
