A question we get a lot at Sprouts is "when should I plant?". It's a hard question to give a definitive answer to because many variables are at play. First, It depends on if you are planting from seed or transplanting. If sowing directly outside, you can usually plant in the ground earlier than the last frost date. Unlike tender foliage, seeds are not damaged during frosty weather. It can take a week or two for seeds to germinate, so accommodate for that time. If you are starting tender seedling indoors, make sure to plant 6-8 weeks before the last frost date to give your plant plenty of time to reach maturity during our short growing season.

When transplanting warm weather crops and tender annual foliage, be aware of frost. These plants can be damaged or die from frost. For best protection, plant outside close to the end of May beginning of June, during a good weather window.
Our trees, shrubs, and perennials are hardy to our areas climate and can even benefit from the cold. If not grown on sight, we source our trees and shrubs from areas with similar climates to ensure that they are acclimated to colder weather. Still, waiting for a good weather window can make all the difference when transplanting. Transplanting is stressful on any plant, so giving it time to acclimate with less stress can be essential to its success. Mild, calm weather with plenty of water can help ease this process for your plant. Snow is insulating and poses little threat. More damaging weather conditions are cold/ clear nights, extreme heat, wind, and of course frost! If your tender plants are already outside with forecast of frost, covering them with a blanket, sheet, wall of water, or cap can protect them from damage. |
